Ownership

[21a top] R’ Avya asked R’ Huna how a jointly owned animal (of a Jew and non-Jew) is different than a vowed/donated sacrifice (because both have “joint partners” the owner and Hashem). R’ Huna avoided answering the question at the time, because he felt ill and needed to eat before answering the question.
The Gemarah answers: By an animal that is half owned by a Jew and half owned by a non-Jew, the only way for the Jew to obtain his rightful share in the animal is by bringing it as a sacrifice (and thereby also happening to allow the non-Jew the ability to eat from it as well). But by a vowed offering, it is in actuality all Hashem’s which after it is brought does the owner then obtain an ability to “share” in. That is why this sacrifice may not be brought on YomTov (since the owner does not initially have a share to claim a right in to allow it to be brought in the first place).

E’s Lesson: We must always remember that everything in the world in reality is ALL Hashem’s. We are “entitled” to nothing. This understanding will allow us to greatly appreciate every single thing that we are ultimately blessed with. Never take anything for granted, and thank Hashem constantly for everything.
