Abaye [15a top]: It is prohibited to wear shoes with spikes on Shabbat or YomTov but one may handle it [due to decree established from an incident that occurred (Shabbos 60a) when Jews fleeing from religious persecution trampled their brethren with spiked shoes].

T’s lesson: Every jewish life is valuable and worth commemorating. We must remember those lost in huge world wars as well as within personal tragedies. We should also strive to learn valuable lessons to apply to our own existence and how to better conduct our lives.
