Nitty-Gritty –

Gemarah [12a bottom]: It was taught in a Braisa in front of R’ Yochanan: If a person cooks the Gid Hanasheh (sciatic nerve) with milk on YomTov, he incurs five sets of lashes. One for cooking the nerve on YomTov (unnecessarily so), one for eating the nerve, one for cooking meat in milk, one for eating milk and meat cooked together, and one for making a fire on YomTov [The Gemarah later challenges the exact amount of total applicable lashes].

T’s Lesson: Why would someone be punished multiple times for one wrong action? We see from here that a person is held liable for each and every thing he does wrong. Hashem does not want us to follow in His “overall” wishes, but wants us to be intricate in the exactness of our performances. “G-d is in the details.”
