Gemarah [11a bottom]: When it comes to an argument between one opinion and a majority (i.e. the Rabbanan), we follow the majority.

T’s lesson: We should always follow that which the leaders of the Jewish people do and advise us to do. We should follow the majority and not say, “I want to be different and stand out!” Such a statement is contrary to our religion in going against what Halacha (Jewish law) dictates. We must follow the majority opinion because that is the prevailing law. We must be individualistic and use our G-d-given talents, but all in the correct framework.
