Who’s Watching? –
R’ Yehudah in the name of Rav [9A middle]: When the Rabbis prohibit something due to maros ayin (the appearance of wrongdoing), the act is prohibited even in private / behind closed doors.
E’s Lesson: The idea behind the Maros Ayin principle may be based in technical training. We have to accustom ourselves to act properly in private so that when we are in public it is that much easier. This idea is nice in theory, but it hits much deeper inside as well. When we refine outer characteristics it helps to change our inner core as well. Our souls can only use our bodies as the keys to hit the strings inside our pianos to create the magnificent music. We should work to perfect our playing in both public grand orchestral and basement private studio settings.
