R’ Zeira [4a middle]: If a hen was purchased for no specific purpose before YomTov and then was slaughtered on the Holiday, the hen and egg are permitted to eat.

T’s lesson: We should always assume proper intention in others. This allows (in our case) the hen to be used for eating purposes (even though he never explicitly said so). Even where there seems to be “proof” exactly to the contrary, we should always use the principle of “dan l’kaf zechus” (giving the benefit of the doubt).
