WELCOME TO GEMARAH BEITZAH!
Rabbi Knows BEST –
Gemarah [2b middle]: Regarding Shabbos (where laws are strict), an anonymous Mishna was formulated in accordance with R’ Shimon’s rulings (who is more lenient) because we already had the stringencies of the day. By Yom Tov (other Holy Days) however (where the laws of the day are more lenient, ie: food preparation), an anonymous Mishna was formulated in accordance with R’ Yehudah (who maintains stricter views).
T’s Lesson: We should always be diligent in our observance of the Mitzvos and Torah laws. We should obey the Rabbis decrees diligently, even if they do not perfect sense to us (in the beginning). We should not think to ourselves “Why are there such strict laws? Why can’t we get a break? These laws seem so restrictive!” We must understand that the Rabbis are acting in our best interests. They fundamentally know how human behavior works. The Gemarah here demonstrates, sometimes the Rabbis structure an environment to help ease us into the commandments. There is no reason to “over-burden” Jews for the sake of it. We should carefully observe all the laws and decrees and know that both Hashem and our Rabbis always have our best interests at heart.
