[50a top] Gemarah: When the merchants of Lod heard that R’ Tarfon ruled that a third of the price of an object is regarded as Ona’ah (prohibited due to laws of interest), they were excited and very happy, since it allowed them a larger margin above the fair price (than the Rabbis’ opinion of a sixth of the price). However, when R’ Tarfon told them that he also allowed a whole day for buyers to return their items, they went back to following the Rabbis’ opinion.

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: It is often wise to hold old off on being too excited prematurely. We should understand and investigate an idea and wait to see how things will actually pan out. Once we have witnessed, in conclusion, what has resulted, it is then appropriate to rejoice and thank Hashem for what we have been blessed with.
