DESTROYING DEBT

[14a top] Rashi (explaining Shmuel): If one finds an intact note of debt owed, we can assume that it belongs to the creditor (and must be returned to him). For if it was already paid and deposited with the debtor, he would have torn the note up.

D-E-ep Thoughts: When a note no longer serves a purpose it gets torn up, specifically to save the debtor from having to pay on past loans. On Yom Kippur, Hashem promises that when we come to him with total Teshuvah, He will tear up all our evil decrees. Even though we may have sinned, our Father in Heaven (who is also the King) awaits our return to Him to turn all our misdeeds into merits.
