[3b bottom] Tosephos: If a man states that he violated Shabbos and wants the death penalty, we do not do it. But, if his testimony will obligate him to bring a sacrifice, we will accept it because he might be wanting to do Teshuva (repentance). We only incriminate a man based on self testimony if he is coming to make himself clean in the process.

D-E-ep Thoughts: As we approach the High Holy days, we must keep in mind the purpose of our prayers. Besides not merely reciting lip service, we should understand that we are trying to improve ourselves. Admission (of guilt) is only the first step [as the Rambam explains] which needs to be followed by Repentance (by feeling sorry), and Commitment (with proper planning) not to slip up again. May we all fulfill True Teshuva and be blessed to come closer to Hashem while having a super sweet and successful new year!
