DEFENDING DISAGREERS

[106a middle] Rami bar Chama asks R’ Nachman, why, if he does not hold like Rav, why would he (R’ Nachman) try so hard to answer a proof against Rav’s position? R’ Nachman answers that he is trying to at least explain and clarify Rav’s own position (about how he would understand this Mishnah). R’ Rosner: One does not have to hold like someone else to explain the other’s position; it is a matter of honoring an individual.

D-E-ep Thoughts: R’ Nachman teaches us that we have to be extremely careful never to attack an individual when we disagree with particular opinions. We have obligations to honor our fellow brethren and should feel for each and every soul that is housed within the exterior shell. Just as we would stand up for an immediate familial blood brother, so too should we defend and stand firm with all our distant brothers across the globe.
