SERIOUS SEPARATION

[83a top] R’ Elazar ben Azaria: A Get is called “Krisus” (a severance). Therefore, it is only considered effective if there is no longer any connection that remains after the divorce [and is viewed as a total separation].
Ritva: This explanation is based on pure logic [and if a man included even one person in a condition of his Get, it would not be effective because there is still a lingering ongoing connection].

D-E-ep Thoughts: Sometimes in life (especially in areas we may have slipped up in before) we need to make a total severance in order to avoid the possibility of sinning again. It may not be enough to limit one’s exposure. If one is serious about changing (and devoted to his/her future cause) there may have to be a complete cut off from a previous involvement [ie: a smoker may have to quit ‘cold turkey’ rather than cut back on the amount of cigarettes per day].
