[53a bottom] Rashi: A damager of sacrifices must pay restitutions, no matter what type of offerings [if obligatory then substitutes are needed, if voluntary then there is compensation required for pain owed due to ruined potential connections to G-d].

D-E-ep Thoughts: We must recognize that people have many feelings and differing emotions. Just like people feel physical pain on varying levels, so too do individuals register emotional and spiritual blows in extreme diversity. Whatever discomforts others are going through, instead of intellectualizing them, we should try to connect as best as we can and at least be honestly sympathetic (even if we believe they “deserve” it).
