FREEDOM PHYLACTERIES

[40a top] R’ Yehoshua ben Levi: If a one puts on Tefillin (phylacteries) in the presence of his master, the (former) slave is viewed as free (since the act symbolizes non-subservience to a human master).

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Our Tefillin should always make us feel proud, free, and connected to Hashem. We should never get caught feeling ‘bound’ as slaves through them, but recognize that by wearing blinders and directing our focus to G-d, we become the freest individuals imaginable.
