INSIDE OUT

[35a middle] Gemarah: We restrain a widow from taking an oath (in regards to collecting payments) because since she is still living with orphaned children. This situation clouds her judgement (as she feels she is helping the orphans, and might rationalize any previous payed payments simply as dues owed to her for her extra efforts) and she would not realize the severity of her swearing while acting with a sense of “Moreh Heter” (false allowance) for future monies claimed (unrightfully).

D-E-ep Thoughts (based on R’ Rosner): We have such easy times giving ourselves ‘Dan Likaf Zechus’ (the benefit of the doubt), as we can [mostly inappropriately] justify almost all our actions! But when it comes to seeing other people, all to often, we jump to false conclusions. We have to learn to step outside ourselves when postulating our own performances and leap inside others to judge them more favorably.
