ALTRUISTIC ADVICE

[96b bottom] Gemarah: R’ Yehudah and R’ Yose agree that if a wife and her husband’s heirs both have claims to the deceased man’s property, it remains in the possession of the wife [and it is incumbent upon the heirs to bring proof for gaining the inheritance]. When R’ Yehudah mentioned that the wife should specify what she is selling [it was not because she is legally required to do so, but rather], he was merely offering ‘good advice’ so people would not call her a voracious woman [Rashi: by using all the income from her sales for sustenance].

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Sometimes, we need to take good advice and avoid doing things that seem grand or lavish which may incite jealousy or bitterness in others. We should always try to live humbly, simply, and with modest means. Jews are not boasters and should live to let G-d in humbly.
