PROMISING PAYBACK

[91b bottom] Abaye: It is a Mitzvah for orphans to pay off their father’s debt (out of respect for their father) [Artscroll notes].

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Often times, people feel upset and resentful when having to deal with “headaches” that others have left behind. They think that since the problems were not created by them, they should not be responsible to clean up those messes. Not only is it actually required to take care of unfinished business, but it is a creditable Mitzvah as well! “Take the key and lock it up,” for your previous fair ladies/gentlemen. We should always try to honor those who have come before us and act with altruistic attitudes when concluding uncompleted contracts and creating closure.
