[81a bottom] Mishnah [quoted from GM’ Yevamos]: There is a question on Beis Shammai’s opinion, and even Beis Hillel (in this instance) agrees with them.
GM’ Eruvin [13]: Beis Hillel is the opinion that we follow in practice based on Bas Kol (Heavenly emanation), because they always, “put their adversary (Beis Shammai)’s words first.”
R’ Rosensweig: This means that they actually studied and analyzed other people’s’ opinions before expressing their own.

D-E-ep Thoughts (based on R’ Rosner): Whenever we have disagreements with other people, we must remain level-minded. Instead of projecting our views forth, we must pause to listen and internalize what they have to say. Unfortunately, today’s modern culture is taught to, “Talk to the hand, cuz the face ain’t listenin.” Remember that we can always learn from others to either gain new insights or at least build strength and fortitude to our own convictions.
