UNORDINARY CHALLENGES

[69b bottom] Ilfa balanced himself on the mast of a ship and challenged those around him, “If anyone can tell me something stated by R’ Chiya or R’ Oshaya that I cannot derive from a Mishnah, I will throw myself from this mast to drown in the sea below.”

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Even when we seem very sure of ourselves (since we are no where near the levels of our previous greats), we should always be careful to never put ourselves in dangerous situations. We are obligated to stay safe and to lead careful lives while protecting the blessings that G-d has graced us with.
