SPIRITUAL SCENTS
[66b middle] R’ Ashi: A groom has to give specific money for his bride’s beautification purposes (ie: perfumes). Tosephos (Rabbeinu Tam) [quoting GM in Yuma]: The smell from the incense in the Temple was so strong that they did not need additional perfumes in Yerushalayim (and rather the money there was used for creams and makeup).
Radbichai: Just like we say in Dayenu (on Pesach), “It would have been enough to have been at Har Sinai and even not received the Torah,” the spiritual environment there engulfed our souls and transcended us to new spiritual heights. When one enters into a perfume store and leaves without buying anything, they still leave smelling fantastic.
D-E-ep Thoughts: It is crucially important to be cognizant of the places which our bodies walk our souls through. Just as our clothes reek from smoke after sitting around a campfire, our souls get sullied by walking through spiritual filth. We must always keep not only our bodies freshly bathed, but remember to surround our souls with fresh fragrances forever.
