[63a top] R’ Akiva was sent by his wife to learn Torah and did not return for twelve years. When he came back he overheard his wife defending him (about being gone so long) to an older man (some say it was Eliyahu the prophet) explaining, “If he would listen to me, he would stay learning for another twelve years.” R’ Akiva then realized that he should return back to his learning as he had his wife’s approval.

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: When we are married to spouses, all of our efforts become joint decisions and we must always act with prior permission. We should never act selfishly, especially not against our partners’ wishes. We get married to accomplish even more as a combined unit and should live as a unified whole in all that we do.
