SINFUL SMELLS

[61a bottom] Ameimar, Mar Zutra, and R’ Ashi were once sitting by the entrance to king Izgur’s palace, when the king’s steward passed by with royal food. R’ Ashi saw that Mar Zutra’s face became pale (due to smelling and craving the food), so he swiped some of the food and put it in Mar Zutra’s mouth [and was later actually thanked by the chef for finding some of the king’s food problematic].

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Smells can often be very enticing. We need to be careful to avoid even areas around non-Kosher establishments that may smell great (as they are damaging and create improper cravings). We should try to avoid walking near non-Kosher restaurants if there are better routes without the alluring sensations.
