BANK BREAKERS
[50a top] R’ Illa: A person may not spend more than ⅕ of his/her assets [on Tzedakah (charity)], so the individual does not become poor him/herself. Chofetz Chaim: [GM’ Yuma Daf 35] Hillel tried to pay the watchman to get into the study hall and still he did not have enough money, so he went up on the freezing snowy roof to learn. Even though he was completely destitute, one needs to set aside time and money for the sake of Torah study [the 1/5th rule does not apply here].
D-E-ep Thoughts: In our modern day “luxurious” lives, we often take for granted how easy it is to Learn Torah. Thank G-d, we are not faced with the persecution of previous days and have many more means available to us. However, we get pulled away by our Evil Inclinations through various other means that completely waste our time (ie: T.V., facebook, ect…). We must learn to use our ‘smart’phones to stay intelligent and fill our data plan usages with Torah lectures and Holy Scriptures.
