SNOWBALLING ARROWS
[31a top] R’ Avin: On Shabbos, if a person shoots an arrow and it travels four amos in a public domain (violating the carrying prohibition) and the arrow tears someone’s clothes along the way, the arrow shooter is exempt from paying for the damaged clothes [because of “Kum Lei B’draba Meinay” (the individual is only accounctable for the harsher punishment (of death instead of moentary payment) when the acts occured simulaneously)]. This case is different than a person just carrying an item because once an arrow is shot the person does not have the option to take it back.
D-E-ep Thoughts: Any projectiles or fires that we set, we are fully accountable for (no matter how out of hand they get). Sometimes, we are careless with our actions and never assume that they will snowball into extremely detrimental catastrophes. Even simple evil words can spread to completely destroy people. We must always be especially cautious of what we do and say and envision how differently we may act if we were on the other end of the line. Hillel used to say, “That which is hateful to you, do not do unto another; This is the whole Torah. The rest is commentary.”
