SPIRITUAL COATS

[30a bottom] Braisa: All misfortune is in the hands of Heaven except for “sickness brought on by exposure to cold and heat.” Mesilas Yesharim (explained by R’ Rosner): Just as one has an obligation to protect him/herself in the cold weather with a coat, so too must one wear a “spiritual coat” to protect oneself from unholy elements [ie: covering our eyes from Pritzus, plugging our ears to Lashon Hara, sealing our lips from speaking evil, blocking unKosher foods from entering our mouths, and shielding our touch from forbidden people/items].

D-E-ep Thoughts: People often get so wrapped up in worrying about their physical health, while their spiritual well-beings go unguarded. Our bodies are only vehicles that we need to help us travel to our end place. How much more so should we be focused on the primary importance of our eternal lives? May we always be shelter our souls and keep our eyes on the biggest prize of them all.
