DESTRUCTIVE MURDERERS
[27a top] Levi: The idolaters’ rules for murderers were that they were hanged and their wives and property were regarded as free for all.
RambaM: Even among the three cardinal sins, nothing is as bad as murder. Nothing destroys the fabric of our society worse than murder [as it demolishes interpersonal relationships].
Maarotz Chayos (relates RambaM to THIS WEEK’S PARSHA!) [GM’ Sanhedrin 7]: Aharon did not scream and protest against the Jews for worshiping the golden calf because they killed his nephew Chur (Miriam’s son) and he was scared for his own life. Aharon reasoned that it would be better for the Jews to serve an idol rather than kill him, because ultimately that action they could better be able to do Teshuvah (repentance) for.
D-E-ep Thoughts: Even though our entire purpose in this world is Deveikus (getting close) to G-d, it is only truly accomplished through interpersonal relationships. This is why Aharon chose to rather have the Jews serve an idol. We must use our relationships (ie: marriage, friends, work, ect…) to better our characters and use those as ways to strengthen our bonds with Hashem [we serve others in order to serve G-d]. We are able to better put our reactions into perspective when we view others’ requests as service of Hashem.
