OPEN BARRELS

[16b bottom] R’ Adda son of Ahavah: At a Besulah (virgin)’s wedding, they would pass a closed barrel of wine in front of her [and if she was not a Besulah it would be an open one].
R’ Rosner: People were much more open about their physical states back in the day (as they would even wear all white robes during their seven days of counting cleanliness after their periods).

D-E-ep Thoughts: In our times we have fallen to such low levels that the physicality has been torn away from its deep spiritual connection (and now we do not publicize physical aspects because they might be misconstrued). It is hard to avoid the Pritzus (immodesty), as everywhere we turn the physical “beauty” is portrayed in the most loose and exploited fashions. We must remember that just as the Holy of Holies in the Temple was hidden in the innermost chambers, real beauty must be concealed and interacted with in only the most sacred of settings.
