MITZVAH MULTIPLICITY

[65b top] Mishna: Tanna Kamma: Only men have the obligation to perform the Mitzvah of “being fruitful and multiplying,” (women have no direct commandment).

D-E-ep Thoughts (based on R’ Tatz): Man is defined as an unlimited potentiality that needs to be directed and actively specified for specific causes (which is a woman’s role, as well as the ‘natural nurturer’). Hashem fills man with the desire for intimacy which can be easily taken for evil intentions [this is necessary for the survival of species (for without it even the chickens would stop laying eggs)]. Nevertheless, Hashem still commands man for him to be able to direct his physical lusts into spiritual endeavors and get rewarded in the process as well. May we always turn our thoughts to Holy spiritual matters and work to perfect our bodies to only be vehicles for our souls’ accomplishments.
