[62a top] Braisa: Moshe smashed the Luchos (stones of the 10 commandments) when he observed their involvement with “strange worship,” and Hashem agreed with his actions.
R’ Lawrence Keleman: The Jewish people created the Aigel (the golden calf) because they were so fascinated with the revelation of the G-d’s hidden workings [His second mask layer; aka: the Merkava, the golden chariot in the sky] rather than observing what was viewed as nature [G-d’s third/outermost layer] . Their minds became so transfixed on G-d’s still externalities [His “skin”/middle layer] to achieve real/miraculous results in the world without having to relate to the ultimate source. The Jewish people failed to connect to Hashem’s essence and core most deepest inner layer.

D-E-ep Thoughts: Sometimes we get lost and latch on to our friends’ and spouse’s superficialities (ie: looks or wealth) and not what deal with what really defines them. We should always remember to look past the surface and try to deeply connect to our fellow Jews’ and our other half’s souls.
