FRUITFUL MULTIPLICATION

[61b bottom] Mishna: To complete the Mitzvah of Peru Urivu (being fruitful and multiplying), Beis Shammai: A man needs to father at least two males (since Moshe Rabbeinu had two sons and then separated from his wife). Beis Hillel: A man needs to father at least one male and one female (as Hashem, in Genesis, created them male and female).

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Having children is one of the biggest and most basic Mitzvos incumbent on Jews, especially males. Children require selflessness, great sacrifice, and hard work. This is in sharp contrast to western culture that is so obsessed with “ME-isms” and selfish attitudes (when many non-Jews do not even want to get married, let alone think about having children). We must focus on ensuring the continuation of our Jewish people as well as the continuation of our individual families as well.
