AVOIDING FILTH
[52a middle] Rav would give Malkus Mardus (“lashes of discipline”/flogging for having acted inappropriately, different than regular 39 lashes given for violation of biblical law) to a man who betrothed a woman in the marketplace because it is considered lowly/“licentious” even if done correctly.
Prac-T-cal Tidbits: All Mitzvos, especially those of marriage, should be done with proper respect, intent, honor, and holiness. Betrothing a woman in a marketplace is putting her on the same level as a slave which is inappropriate, shameful, and filthy. Just like a wedding should be proper and clean, so too all Mitzvos should not be done in any disgusting manners [ie: bentching with gross dirty clothing or saying Asher Yatzar (blessing after using the bathroom) with excrement surrounding a person]. We should always give respect and honor which is deserving of the commandments of Hashem.
