LINGERING REMINDERS
[38a bottom] Mishna: After a Yebum marriage takes place and the woman later passes away, her new Yavam husband inherits all her belongings, except for the original husband’s Kesuvah money (an amount previously set aside for a married woman in case of a divorce).
We learn that a Yebum marriage is just like any other marriage, except for a few remaining traces of the original brother’s marriage to this woman (ie: like the Kesuvah money).
D-E-ep Thoughts: The inheriting brother (that is marrying his deceased brother’s childless wife) should always remember that he is specifically stepping into a unique Mitzvah (when otherwise this relationship is specifically prohibited). These unapparent ordinances should keep his thoughts and actions in check when marrying his brother’s wife. Throughout life, it is all too easy to get swept away in the hustle and bustle. We need to take time to re-sensitize ourselves and reflect on G-d’s gracious gifts to always appreciate the subtle super sparks surrounding us. This way, just like the Yavam, we will keep our minds and hearts on track.
