DEFENSIVE ATTACKS

[9a bottom] Gemarah: When Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai argue, it is not looked at as an argument because we hold according to Beis Hillel.

D-E-ep Thoughts (based on R’ Rosner): When the Talmud describes people arguing with each other, they are called “men with shields.” Normally, when people attack each other it is more suitable to use the terminology of fighting with swords. From these precise specific words we are taught a valuable lesson. When we do disagree with people we are not supposed to be “out for blood.” We are taught to defend our positions with respect for the other parties involved. We must never tear down creations or relationships and act in ways to always build the world around us and bring people to higher spiritual states.
