SAVIORS

[22a middle]: Abaye: Is one permitted to extinguish a fire on YomTov to avoid a financial loss? [A danger to lives however, supercedes most prohibitions, including this one.]

T’s lesson: There is no greater deed than that of saving a life. On Holy Days, Sacanas Nefashos (danger to lives) pushes aside even labors that would normally be strictly forbidden. “One who saves one life, it is as if he saved the entire world.” It is imperative to ensure the safety of each and every person. This is in relation to physical saving, but also the spiritual saving of a Jew. The Neshama (soul) is intertwined with the body. We must rescue our brethren in these difficult times of rampant assimilation.
