STRICTLY BUSINESS

[82b bottom] R’ Yehudah: Originally in the Kesuvah marriage documents, money was pledged, without leveraging possessions as security for the payment. However, men were then growing old without marrying women (because they could not find women who would agree to those terms them).
Shitah Mekubetzes (explaining Rashi): Women were concerned that if their husbands would sell their land properties (and then die or divorce them), the women would be unable to collect their owed Kesuvah monies because movable cash would be hidden by their husbands. Shimon ben Shetach instituted that all of a husband’s possessions are to be pledged to his future wife in her Kesuvah.

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: We should always enter into marriage through love (and with a ‘business contract’ mentality). We must be eternally thankful for our other halves agreeing to help us become whole again to accomplish our soul corrections and fulfill our purposes in this world.
