INSIDE OUT

[24a top] Gemarah: A man was inappropriate in private during his mourning period and was subsequently killed by pigs as a punishment. Be’urai Hadaf: In public (outside), this man observed the laws properly, but privately (inside) he was not following Halacha. This is exactly like the pig which killed him, because outwardly a pig shows off Kosher signs of split hooves, but inside it does not chew its cud (and is therefore un-Kosher).

E’s Lesson: We must not be hypocritical in our actions. We should always behave with proper Torah manners both in public as well as in private. If we truly understand and connect with values and ideas (in our hearts, and not just intellectually) we would not have to struggle and never need just to put on a show.
