He said to them, \u201cIf the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(law) is like me, let this CAROB TREE prove it!\u201d Thereupon, the carob tree uprooted from its place and walked a hundred cubits across the field. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chachamim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said to him, \u201cNo proof can be brought from a carob tree.\u201d Then he said to them, \u201cIf the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like me, let this STREAM OF WATER prove it!\u201d Thereupon, the stream of water stopped flowing downhill and reversed its flows backwards upstream. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chachamim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said back to him, \u201cNo proof can be brought from a stream of water.\u201d Again R\u2019 Eliezer tried and said, \u201cIf the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like me, let the STONE WALLS of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beis<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medrash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prove it.\u201d Thereupon, the stones dislodged from the walls, started falling, and were about to crush everyone inside. R\u2019 Yehoshua yelled at the stones, saying, \u201cWhen Torah scholars are engaged in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dispute, what right do you have to interfere!?\u201d At that moment, they stopped falling and hung floating in space exactly where they were [they could not fall in honor of Rabbi Yehoshua, nor did they re-form proper walls in honor of Rabbi Eliezer]. Finally, R\u2019 Eliezer exclaimed, \u201cIf the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like me, let it be proven from Heaven!\u201d Thereupon, a Heavenly Voice cried out, \u201cWhy do you argue with Rabbi Eliezer, seeing that in all matters, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halachah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like him?\u201d R\u2019 Yehoshua stood up and exclaimed, \u201cTorah is not in Heaven!\u201d R\u2019 Yirmiyah explained: Since the Torah had already been given to man at Mount Sinai, we pay no attention to Heavenly voices [because Hashem has written in the Torah at Mount Sinai: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the majority the matter shall be decided<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and the Chachomim are the majority opinion)].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vilna Goan<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Even though the Rabbis did not accept miracles as proof, each succesive time, R\u2019 Eliezer was trying to show his correctness. In the three foundation pillars of life (as to how one should live correctly), he demonstrated his power them (by reversing their states):<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) BE HAPPY with what you have and where you are [demonstrated by a deeply rooted and settled carob tree which survives on very little water]<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) STAY HUMBLE [as water always flows down stream and lowers itself]<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) WORK HARD [maintaining rock solid focus within stone walls of a study hall]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>D-E-ep Thoughts<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: No matter what we do in life, we should live by the three rules of thriving: <\/span><b>Be Happy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Stay Humble<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Work Hard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
