Just a Little Late

[21b middle] R’ Meir: One who meets his friend and offers him condolences after 12 months is like a doctor who offers to re-break a foot that already healed [this is like reopening an old wound, and is causing fresh pain for the person].

T’s Lesson: We should always be careful when trying to offer support for someone once an incident has passed. We must make sure to offer our sympathies at the right time lest we open old wounds. We must always care deeply about our fellow Jews and only to try help when the timing is appropriate.
