[18a middle] Rabbah and Abaye both descended from Aili Hakohen‘s family. Although members of the Aili Hakohen family usually lived very short lives as a result of Hashem’s decree, these two sages sought to live longer. Rabbah, who engaged in Torah study, lived to forty and Abaye who did Torah study and acts of kindness lived to age sixty.

T’s lesson: We see the power of torah and kindness here. Torah alone has the ability to extend one’s life while torah and kindness together gives even more life to a person. These two combined have the ability to thwart a decree related to one’s lifespan on earth. We should seek as much torah and kind acts so as to have as much life as possible to do Hashem’s will on earth.
