Mommy’s Chicks –

R’ Channah bar Ami [10a bottom] (explains the following argument): Beis Hillel: Verbal designation alone is enough to “prepare” baby chicks for use on YomTov. Beis Shammi: Physical movement is necessary to designate them for use on the Holiday.  If you did not move baby chicks before YomTov (to set them aside) you may not touch them on YomTov. We are worried that on YomTov morning when you go to take these chicks you might feel bad (most people leave these first chicks to be with their mother before taking some away) and therefore, you might put them back (that is a violation of moving Muktzah for no reason).

This same example (as above with the chicks) is applied as to why sometimes we are allowed to help “force” a person into a Mitzvah (ie: Bris Milah/ circumcision). When someone willingly accepts the Torah and consents to a Bris, when it actually comes time to do the operation and all the scary tools are pulled out, he may get too scared to do it in the moment and we can “help” him fulfill his proper deeper intention.

E’s Lesson: Many times we make proper decisions based on our intellect and pure Neshama. However, when it comes time to actually doing the action our Yezter Hara (evil inclination) jumps in to give every excuse and rationalization not to perform the Mitzvah. We should always remember our proper intentions and never get lost in the confusion and ‘doubt’ of the Yetzer Hara.
