[84a middle] Gemarah: If a man made a vow/condition to keep himself awake all day, he may indeed fulfill it by continuously pricking himself with a thorn all day (to stay awake).

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: We should always push ourselves to stay awake as long as possible to ensure the completion of Mitzvos and Torah learning. We should never use laziness or tiredness as excuses for lack of spiritual accomplishments [because many times if it were for physical pleasures we would indeed make sure we had enough energy].
