INEFFECTUAL INTENTIONS

[48a top] Ritva: The Gemarah did not mention the possibility of making a land sale with a stipulation that Yovel does not affect it (and would therefore not revert to the original owner’s property on the 50th year) to demonstrate that even if one did make this condition, it would be useless (as it would not prevent the land reverting back to its original owner) [and it is still prohibited to make this stipulation nevertheless].

D-E-ep Thoughts: The reason we are prohibited from attempting actions that would still have no real result is because G-d judges us on our intentions. The fact that we have no “real power” in this world does not mean that we should give up trying or become lazy (since everything will be taken care of Ultimately anyway). We might have the same life starting and end points, but what we attempt to accomplish is how we get rewarded and punished in the next life.
