BIRD BABBLE

[45a bottom] R’ Ilish, while in jail, was told by a man listening to the ravens and doves that the birds were advising R’ Ilish to flee from captivity.
R’ Akiva Eiger quoting Aruch: R’ Ilish understood the birds talking as well.
R’ Chaim Shmuelovitz: R’ Ilish still listened to the man’s interpretation (over his own) because he did not trust himself. Since he was the one in the predicament, he was worried that he was only hearing what he wanted to hear.

D-E-ep Thoughts: Very often, we understand things drastically differently when it concerns us. We have very biased, and non-objective, opinions when it comes to something personally involving ourselves. It is human nature to only think good of ourselves and when confronted with important decisions, we should seek the advice of others for outside (not as slanted) opinions.
