BAD BRIBES

[105a bottom] Gemarah: “Bribes blind the eyes of the wise.” Even very wise men would suffer blindness (of the heart), as it, “perverts the words of the righteous,” [and causes confusion of the mind]. Initially, discernment will diminish, and long term abuse will cause loss of all objectivity [with punishments of both figurative and literal blindness].

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: People should always be careful to avoid being flattered and bribed by others. No matter how righteous people think they may be, they will always be affected and swayed by basic bribes [true objectivity will be lost (even by only one dollar or a cookie)]. We must be extra careful in all aspects of our lives (especially in business) that involve slippery slopes of bad advice and other dangerous territories.
