[53b top] Ravin came to Bavel from Israel and recited a ruling in Reish Lakish’s name. However, Abaye instructed the Sages to tell Ravin, “The gratitude for your favor is taken away and cast onto thorns,” (the information which he intended to be an assistance to the students was of no use to them since R’ Hoshaya already explained this ruling in Bavel).

Prac-T-cal Tidbits: Many times we may think that we have a novel notion, but a bit of digging would have proven that the idea was already discussed elsewhere. We should always search for knowledge and try to give proper credit to previously established ideas.
