FAIR-WEATHERERS

[76a bottom] Gemarah: The Jews did not accept converts during King Dovid and King Shlomo’s times because they did not want people converting just when the Jews were on top of world [R’ Rosner: One cannot just be a “fair-weather Jew”].

D-E-ep Thoughts: It is easy to ‘Praise the L-rd’ when everything is going our way. But in Judaism, we are taught that when times are tough (ie: when a relative/friend passes away), the tough get going; we recite “Blessed is the True Judge.” We must remember to remain loyal and faithful especially during the ‘dark’ times. It is in these crucial moments that we show our true colors and must stand firm in our belief and commitment to Hashem. Just like the moon (which fades and then reappears), we will all be rewarded with brilliance after staying calm through the storm.
