PAINFUL JOY

[73b top] Tanna Kamma: An Onen (one whose relative has just passed away) may not eat Bikkurim (sanctified first fruits).
RambaM: An Onen has this prohibition because Bikkurim must be eaten in a state of Simcha (joy), and that is lacking here.

D-E-ep Thoughts (based on R’ Tatz): Jewish law mandates how people must act and feel in varying situations. Even when we experience sadness, we must go through the pain with a sense of inner joy (even if there is pain and anguish on superficial levels). Just like when one sweats through a torturous workout routine, the pain on the individual’s twisted face is supported by a deep gratification of working towards a goal. Even sorrow can be filled with gladness when we know we are performing G-d’s will and elevating our souls.
