Cut It Down

[14a top] R’ Nachman bar Yitzchak: The verse of “those who were cut down” is written as a blessing. It refers to Torah scholars who cut down on their own sleep and learn words of Torah instead. Hashem will reveal secret matters to them (as a reward for their sacrifice) in the world to come, as it says, “their revealed secrets will be like a pouring river.”

T’s Lesson: Just as these great sages are Mesiras Nefesh (over-exerting themselves) at a loss to their own sleep to learn Torah, so too we should cut back on some of our own “needs” as well for Torah. Try to think of and implement at least one thing we could cut back on daily this year to make more room for Torah (ie: less tv watching, going to movies, etc).
